The galapacos is a great place for wildlife. I will post pictures at the end of the week but I also had an amazing snorkel trip.

We left our boat on a dingy and headed to the snorkel spot. On the way we passed 4 manta rays swimming around. I of course jumped in. I was swimming with then for a few min before anyone else quite realized what was going on and joined me (and scared them away).

We then did a drift snorkel where we saw tons of fish, turtles, white tipped reef sharks, sting rays, sea lions and to top it off 3 more manta rays on the way back to the boat.

The next day we swam with penguins.

I would like to return and do some diving. There are hammerheads in the area and a couple on the plane said the dove with tons of them. Supposedly they also see whale sharks.

Crazy place.

The galapacos are a 1.5 hour flight off the coast of south America. They are in the Midwestern time zone.

I arrived on my boat. It’s the second of 4 classes with the first being the most expensive. This is supposed to be a great place to dive, but those are book up months early as there are only a few dive boats and the other boats now cannot offer diving. So I am on a ecotour.

There are 16 of us on this boat. Mostly couples except for a room of two girls and myself and my male room partner. Each room has it’s own bathroom so it’s pretty nice. The biggest downside on the boat is the food. It’s been pretty bad. The inca trail food was much better and they had to carry everything we ate.

The wildlife is pretty amazing. First day we snorkled with sea lions. They swim right by you and come check you out. I could do that everyday. Yesterday we went to a beach with more snorkeling. Swam with more sea otters and saw sone white tipped read sharks. There were sea lions eveywhere on the beach. In fact I had to move my legs or I swear one would have run over my outstretched limbs. There were crabs and lizzards all over the rocks. In the afternoon we went on a hike where there were blue footed boobies (birds) along with baby albatross and other boobies and lizzards. Basically the wildlife here has been protected since the 50’s and they seem to not care about humans. I don’t think I have ever been this close to wildlife. Birds just look at you as you walk by. You have to be careful not to step on anything as the creatures just sit/lay down and don’t move.

The galapgos are pretty specail. The boat rides have been nice but sone people have been sea sick. I just think of Indonesia and this is worlds apart from that boat.

One other fun fact is that my roomate for this trip mike is a writer for lonely planet and he is here writing the new edition of Ecuador which he wrote 3 years ago. He has actually worked on 16 lp books. Nice guy. I am attempting to take the picture of him for the inside cover and get acknowledged in a lp 🙂

– they don’t spell Ecuador with a q
– in 2000 they had a financial crisis and a run on the banks. To stabilize the economy and money they moved to usd as there currency. They do still make their own coins except for the dollar coin (which they like and use, I have had saquajeweas in my pocket on day one)
– guayaquil is actually the largest city in this country with 3 million people while Quito has 2. This is a large city on a river and the coast and thus is the shipping center. I was told this morning that Guayaquil makes the money and Quito spends it.

Arrived in ecudore today. The best fact so far is that the national currency of this country is the USD. I was walking along and saw a bunch of people buying stuff with twenties. I thought maybe I had wondered into a bad district where black market ruled. Later when I walked by mcdonalds they too where using the dollar. It’s a little weird to be in a foreign country where the dollar is used everywhere.

I have currently been in Peru for the last 2 plus weeks.  I had the extra joy of being joined by my sister shannon and my friend Mike Mast and girlfriend Kathy.

We spent 2 nights in Lima (winds would not let us land in Cusco, we actually flew all the way there and after two windy tries at landing, we went back to Lima).  While the coast has some beutiful places and cliffs, I now agree with the locals from Cusco and people who I have spoken to about Peru in general…..  Miss Lima, go to Cusco.

Cusco is a great colonial town with lots going on.  Its the adventure capital of Peru and has lots of hostals, churches, squares, resteraunts, trip organizers, etc.  Its a cool town.

Week one was a 5 day Inca Trail.  It was honestly the first time in my life I was in better shape than Mike Mast and my sister (TAKE THAT).  I would rate this walk the lowest of the three I took.  There were just too many people.  In fact (not that I am some expert) but it felt like amatuer hour.  I don´t think anyone signs up for a multiweek trip without thinking it through, but three real days of hiking brings out people that probably should think throught their hiking and packing ability.  It was great though and the weather and mountains were beautiful.  It all ends up with a walk into Machupicchu so you really have to enjoy the hike.  I will post some pics when I get a good connection again.

The second week we went to Manu National Park (a rainforest).  Here we went on some hikes and went on long boat rides looking for stuff.  If you are into insects and birds, this is the trip for you.  I am really glad I went and enjoyed it, however I do think I like large mamals and fish better.  We did both trips with a great operator SAS where the food was excellent.

Unfortunatley I felt ill the night in between the two trips so I didn´t get to this blog till now.  It was  a one day food bug.  Travelers know the one.  Shannon said I must be sick as I skipped a night out at the bar.

I am now off to the Galapagos for a week before meeting Susan in Cabo for Turkey Day.  This trip is going by really quickly.  TOO QUICKLY.

So I now am the proud owner of the picture everyone else seems to have.  Me standing and Machupichu in the background.

Shannon, Mast, Kathy and I are all now showered and sitting at the end of the 4 day trek.  It is the rainy season but we had PERFECT weather.  It rained only when we were in tents and it was bright sunshine today at the Inca Town.

I will post more (and the picture of course) when I have more time, however I just wanted to say we are all safe and resting here in Peru.  Tomorrow we return to Cusco and Sunday we lose Shannon 😦 while the three of us head to Manu (think Amazon).  I should get a post in before then (hopefully with a picture or two)

Even though we are not there yet, we could enjoy their beer.

After a quick night in Lima we headed to the airport off to cusco. After flying to cusco and trying to land twice we returned to Lima.

As you can tell from reading this blog, I am very concerned about my carbon footprint and I am trying to keep my flying to a minimum (see my quick trips to sf from close locals as kathmandu and madrid.
