Galapagos
The galapacos are a 1.5 hour flight off the coast of south America. They are in the Midwestern time zone.
I arrived on my boat. It’s the second of 4 classes with the first being the most expensive. This is supposed to be a great place to dive, but those are book up months early as there are only a few dive boats and the other boats now cannot offer diving. So I am on a ecotour.
There are 16 of us on this boat. Mostly couples except for a room of two girls and myself and my male room partner. Each room has it’s own bathroom so it’s pretty nice. The biggest downside on the boat is the food. It’s been pretty bad. The inca trail food was much better and they had to carry everything we ate.
The wildlife is pretty amazing. First day we snorkled with sea lions. They swim right by you and come check you out. I could do that everyday. Yesterday we went to a beach with more snorkeling. Swam with more sea otters and saw sone white tipped read sharks. There were sea lions eveywhere on the beach. In fact I had to move my legs or I swear one would have run over my outstretched limbs. There were crabs and lizzards all over the rocks. In the afternoon we went on a hike where there were blue footed boobies (birds) along with baby albatross and other boobies and lizzards. Basically the wildlife here has been protected since the 50’s and they seem to not care about humans. I don’t think I have ever been this close to wildlife. Birds just look at you as you walk by. You have to be careful not to step on anything as the creatures just sit/lay down and don’t move.
The galapgos are pretty specail. The boat rides have been nice but sone people have been sea sick. I just think of Indonesia and this is worlds apart from that boat.
One other fun fact is that my roomate for this trip mike is a writer for lonely planet and he is here writing the new edition of Ecuador which he wrote 3 years ago. He has actually worked on 16 lp books. Nice guy. I am attempting to take the picture of him for the inside cover and get acknowledged in a lp 🙂
