– in 2000 they had a financial crisis and a run on the banks. To stabilize the economy and money they moved to usd as there currency. They do still make their own coins except for the dollar coin (which they like and use, I have had saquajeweas in my pocket on day one)
– guayaquil is actually the largest city in this country with 3 million people while Quito has 2. This is a large city on a river and the coast and thus is the shipping center. I was told this morning that Guayaquil makes the money and Quito spends it.
